Mobile Video Unit enhances social and behavior change communication in Nampula

With a new Mobile Video Unit (MVU) having arrived in Nampula to support social and behavior change communication (SBCC) activities on Transform Nutrition, a multi-year project funded by USAID and implemented by ADPP and partners, including h2n, a community-based communication channel is being added to project activities. The MVU has three large LED screens and can easily be moved to locations where people gather.

“The MVUs are basically TV screens on wheels, but they don’t compete with other channels, or with any other media at all, and attract captive audiences, for example at markets, health centers or soccer matches,” explains Neima Neves, Project Specialist for Community Video at h2n. An MVU can potentially attract hundreds and even thousands of people in a day, but are not only used for dissemination of content. “We think about them as centers of attraction that help draw lots of people to information sessions or other facilitated project activities,” says Neima. According to her, the MVU takes on the role that community theater groups used to fulfill in the past but with much more flexibility and a at a much lower cost.

Under Transform Nutrition, the MVU will show community videos, educational videos and television programs produced by h2n for the project or other related content that supports project objectives. In other contexts, the MVU can also be combined with mobile family planning clinics and other outreach efforts. h2n works with community-based communication, produces television programs and video content, organizes youth centers and pursues a comprehensive gender equality agenda.
