In close collaboration with the DPGCAS in Nampula, nine local associations and three community radio stations, h2n has been organizing the distribution of 1,000 water buckets (baldes com torneira) and large amounts of soap, bleach and other personal hygiene products to vulnerable groups in Nampula city this week. These groups include the elderly, disabled, widows, victims of domestic violence and malnourished children, with each group represented by an association. “This assistance comes exactly at the right time for us, it is like receiving oxygen when you have trouble breathing,” commented Nelson Angelo, coordinator of the Association for Support to the Elderly & Helpless (AVEDOS), which supports 588 elderly in Nampula city. The distribution efforts started on Monday with a focus on persons with disability supported by the Association for PWD in Mozambique (ADEMO) and continued with different vulnerable groups on subsequent days. “Our goal is always to intervene where we can make the biggest difference,” says Ana Macuacua, program assistant at h2n, who manages the initiative. “In this effort, everyone involved worked together with exceptional goodwill, speed and efficiency,” says Ana, who praised the collaboration between the government structure, local associations and her own organization. The water buckets and packets of soap go to an estimated one thousand households in the city and strengthen basic prevention measures at the neighborhood level by making handwashing and other hygiene measures easier. The community radios participate as media partners, ensure that the initiative is well known throughout the city before, during and after the distribution and broadcast a series of public service announcements and daily podcasts on COVID-19 themes produced by h2n as part of a broader COVID-19 community communication effort financed by Norway. h2n, which is primarily supported by Norway, works extensively with community radios, produces community videos, broadcasts the “Saude e Vida” television program on health and wellness, facilitates youth engagement hubs and pursues a rapidly expanding gender equality agenda.
