Community Radio leadership conferences see radios as drivers of social and behavior change

Over the last two weeks, h2n has held annual leadership conferences for community radio station coordinators and other personnel in the north, central and southern regions. When these conferences first started several years ago, they took place in Nampula and only covered the northern provinces, but this year three separate conferences were held in Maputo, Beira and Nampula (and were for the first time covered by TVM as well), involving managers and key personnel from more than 40 community radio stations. The theme of the conferences was “Community radios as catalysts for change”. Speaking at the Maputo conference, Sergio Chusane, executive director of h2n, commented: “The community radios are part of the community infrastructure. When we strengthen the community radios, we also strengthen the communities.” The leadership conferences reflected h2n’s increasing focus on community radio stations as drivers of social and behavior change, for example by educating and encouraging listeners to adopt appropriate health and nutrition behaviors. “The leadership conference only helps to plant the seeds, but we expect to see lasting results in the communities,” commented Joao Bosse, national coordinator for radio at h2n. h2n works extensively with community radios in all provinces, is scaling up community video programs, broadcasts the weekly prime-time television program “Saude e Vida” on health and wellness, develops youth engagement hubs and pursues a rapidly expanding gender equality agenda.
